Chickweed

Chickweed (Stellaria media (Linn.) Villars), also called starweed, satin flower, or mouse-ear — is a common weed in the carnation family. It contains many plant compounds, including phytosterols, tocopherols, triterpene saponins, flavonoids, and vitamin C. Applying whole chickweed as a plaster to swollen areas or even broken bones could provide anti-inflammatory, anti-irritation, and soothing effects. The whole plant can fight inflammation when used for inflamed skin, joints, and respiratory tract illnesses like bronchitis. Chickweed may fight germs and help heal wounds and infections. It has been used for these purposes in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries, primarily for skin diseases and dermatitis . In Ireland and Britain, chickweed is a common remedy for alleviating skin problems, speeding wound healing, and reducing irritation and itchiness.

Cocoa Butter

Cocoa butter is an antioxidant powerhouse. High in antioxidants, it helps fight off free radical damage, and is also an anti inflammatory. While it is known to reduce stretch marks, it is also reputed to help with healing scars. High in fatty acids, it hydrates the skin deeply, making it a rich moisturizer. It also contains oleic, palmitic and stearic acids, all of which nourish the skin. It has also been known to help with sensitive skin.

null

Coconut Oil

The medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil have antimicrobial properties that can help protect against harmful microorganisms, especially skin infections. Applying coconut oil directly to the skin also helps with the prevention of the growth of microorganisms, ala bacteria, due to its lauric acid content. Capric acid also helps prevent anti fungal growth.

Coconut oil also has been shown to have anti inflammatory and pain relieving properties. It is able to improve the anti oxidant status, which in turns reduces oxidative stress.

null

Emu Oil

Emu oil is used to relieve minor aches and pains, help wounds heal quicker, and protect skin from the elements. The most popular benefit is its use as an anti inflammatory, though it also contains compounds that have anti oxidant properties. Made up of smaller particles, allowing the carriage of many healthful compounds to deep layers of the skin.

Emu oil contains high amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), antioxidants, and compounds, including essential fatty acids, namely omega-3, omega 6, and omega-9 fatty acids that help reduce inflammation, ease muscular pain, and arthritic joint pain. They may also help relieve signs of wrinkles, scars, and blemishes by nourishing the skin cells. It also contains vitamin A, an antioxidant and essential nutrient, which is an excellent skin tonic. Emu oil also has additional compounds like carotenoids, flavones, polyphenols, tocopherol, and phospholipids.

null

Goldenseal Herb

Used by the Native Americans as a tonic for sore throats, eye infections, ulcers, and even arrow wounds. It has been used as an insect repellent and as a pesticide for crops. Recent studies have found Goldenseal to be beneficial against viruses and infections. The antibiotic properties of Goldenseal are due to the alkaloid content, including berberine, which has been found to be effective against organisms.

null

Oregon Grape Root

Used in medicinal remedies since the late nineteenth century for its blood purifying properties as well as its antibiotic properties. It is well-known for treating skin and mouth disease caused by toxins in the blood. Oregon Grape root is also a tonic for all glands, promotes digestion, and aids in the assimilation of nutrients.

null

Plantain Herb

One of the most commonly used plants in the world. This is the plant that produces psyllium. Plantain has been used to treat stomach ulcers internally and externally for stings and venomous bites. Used topically, it can help stop bleeding and heal damaged tissues.

null

Sunflower Oil

Sunflower oil contains several compounds that have benefits for skin, such as oleic acid, vitamin E, sesamol and linoleic acid.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that can help protect skin from free radicals and from adverse effects of the sun. Using a skincare product formulated with sunflower oil is a good way to obtain vitamin E’s benefits for skin.

Linoleic acid helps to maintain the skin’s natural barrier, supporting its ability to retain moisture. It also has an anti inflammatory effect when used topically. It can be said it is  effective for protecting skin against bacteria and germs.

Topical use of sunflower oil was also beneficial for healing wounds faster due to its oleic acid content; while sesamol apparently had chemopreventive properties.

Usnea

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Usnea is known for its "cooling and drying" energetic properties and its ability to “clear heat, move damp, and resolve toxicity”. It contains a chemical called Usnic Acid, which is often included as an ingredient in creams, powders, toothpastes, mouthwash, deodorants, hair shampoos and sunscreen products. Usnic Acid is used as an active principle or as a preservative in these applications. In herbal practice Usnea Lichen is traditionally prepared as a alcohol tincture or extract. It is used to promote excretion within the kidneys and the urinary tract, which supports a healthy immune response in the respiratory tract and mucous membranes, healthy functions of the urinary system, and maintains a healthy microbial balance within the Urinary System.
